viagra cialis

My last day at my secure and decently paying  job will be June 15th, 2011.   I am not going to a new position even though I have gotten a couple offers in the last couple months.   One of my friends said that I am spoiled for being able to pick and choose six figure jobs, and I guess I am a bit spoiled, but the true cost of keeping any job is just much greater than what I would gain right now.  Here are some of my reasons why I quit.

1. viagra cialis My company was purchased by a large conglomerate last August, and after the acquisition many long time employees quit.  In my part of the world I became the only person doing more work than I ever had before with no increase in pay.  In fact, our pay actually decreased due to increased health insurance costs.  You may say that if I went to a different company this would improve, and that maybe so, but that doesn’t change the fact I take home a very small percentage of my pay.  Since we are a dual income family, my income is a second income and gets taxed at our highest marginal rate.  Additionally, I have to pay for childcare.  After getting gouged by a 47% tax and then paying for childcare, suddenly an above average income is quite below average and is no longer worth the stress of a full time job.  Many people with children should do some math right now and see if it is actually worth having a second income.  They may find that they are just working to pay for the privilege of working.

viagra cialis- The part I hate about any job is that you trade your time for money.  You are basically  a profit center for someone else.   Since I work for a public company now it is pretty easy to figure out how much they profit off each employee.  The simple math is to take the yearly profit numbers and divide it by the number of employees.  Believe me, I get paid a lot less than what they generate per employee.  I want my time to be mine so I can spend it as I need to.  Now that I have a young son I need that flexibility so that I don’t have to leave a ton of meetings to take care of a sick child.  I need to have more control in my method of income generation.  I can’t be just a pawn in a giant chess game anymore.

viagra cialis – Since my company was acquired, I started to because that seemed like a logical way to grow my online income.  So far I have thrown down around $12,000, but that has created a fairly stable monthly income of $1200 to $1500.  I have run these sites for just a few months, but I have gotten quite a good chunk of my principal back already.  With each site I purchased I learned a little bit more about how to run and monetize a site and what makes a website valuable.   Right now I make enough online to pay for food and rent and  I am determined to scale my operation further and make more than my salary by next year.

I titled this post “into the abyss” after the article written by James Altucher titled ““.    That article is in tune with what I feel and in the end of the article he says:

viagra cialis or do something utterly drastic to shake things up. “What would I do?” people can then ask, “I have responsibilities, mouths to feed, mortgage to pay. You don’t get it.” Yes I do. You throw yourself into the abyss. You get scared. You stay up late at night thinking and thinking and thinking. You feel like the death of emptiness is worse than the slow death of your job. But you’ll figure it out. One by one all of your old colleagues will disappear from your life. They will die.

You’ll still be alive.

So I am throwing myself into the abyss and I truly believe that I will emerge on the other side with a brand new life that is much better than the slow grinding death at a  job at a gargantuan soulless corporation. The worst thing that could happen is that I get another “real job” again, but like I have written before, that is I am taking a chance on my own abilities, and it may sound crazy, but is it really crazy if you consider that multiple companies were willing to hire me to generate a profit for them?  Why shouldn’t I trust my ability to add value to my own life?   Why shouldn’t you?

Sounds like you are on the right path. And I’m fascinated by your purchase of other websites to grab income.

You’ll figure this out. If I may, some suggestions:
- make sure you stay in shape and exercise every day. Healthy is prerequisite to happy.
- exercise your idea muscle. Either write or list ideas every day (about anything. doesnt matter)
- emotional (don’t let the free time bog you down in anything emotional)
- spiritual – be grateful for everything you have. and then grateful again.

if this all sounds pedantic, i apologize. i want this to be the best time in your life and i’m envious of the exhiliarating jump you are taking.

Thank you so much James for commenting! I read your blog a lot and I agree with a lot of it. I will definitely write more after I quit. I will have more time to write and build stuff I actually care about. I realized that I just don’t care about working for others anymore. If I have to do it again I’ll do it, but hopefully it will not come to that.

Purchasing websites is just like purchasing any business. It’s a small alternative investment right now and it’s not hard to get into it with a small amount of capital. I am still learning and testing the waters. You can find a lot of information at if you’re interested in reading about it. It’s fun to find a gem with a low buy it now price and snatch it up. Anyway, I should go to sleep now since I still have to finish up one more release. Hopefully it is the last one for any employer.

I also work for “The Man”. I would like to be in charge of my own destiny. You have inspired me to write my own blog and maybe buy a web site. Thanks for the info on buying a web site. I will pass on your latest Blog to my oldest son. He has graduated from college and cannot find a decent job. Where can I find info on starting a Blog that can generate income.
I really enjoy your Blog because you include your family. We have three boys. I agree spending time with your family is important. The more time you spend with your kids, the more likely your children will become successful.

I find this a little hard to believe. You quit $100,000/year job to micromanage a $14,000 hobby? This doesn’t add up.

If I was in your position, I would try to find a firm that will work with you to achieve the hours and responsibilities you are comfortable with. Even a part-time role at 25 hours/week and $50,000 beats this website hobby hands-down.

viagra cialison 04.21.11 at 12:55 pm

Joe, you obviously didn’t read my post. If I got a part time gig at 25 hours/week and earned 50,000 a year, I’d be taking almost nothing home. Right now I pay for 25 hours/week in childcare and that’s 1000/month. Also, my income is taxed at the highest marginal rate above my husband’s income. So 50k is automatically 25k, and then you subtract the childcare then there’s 12k a year left. If I put more time into my online business I could earn much more than that.

I am currently making plans to throw myself into the abyss as well! Sometimes, you’ve just got to go with your gut and do something drastic. I, too, am looking at the numbers. I realize that I could be doing what I love on my own time while making more money. What a concept! Thanks for the inspiration!

Yeah for the abyss! I’ve lived here for 3+ years, and I would not ever be able to go back!!! Congrats!

I also just took the plunge into the abyss and your post was extremely refreshing. I’m a twentysomething with a not so high profile former job like yours but still the feelings you shared resonated the emotions and thoughts I had… I served my last day on the 15th as well and am taking the time to purposefully take a pause and reevaluate stuff… Anyway, I’m on a budget though so I guess the soul searching has a certain deadline… But hey, good luck to us!

Congrats for doing the math and figuring out that time is worth more than money.

Your kids will grow up faster than you will ever believe. The time you invest in them from will pay off for the rest of their lives.

You will have less stress and more connection to self, kids and spouse.

ENJOY! The best things in life are not things. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom and an employed mom later on. My husband walked away from a big job like yours — he’ll NEVER go back.

Bravo BagLady! Welcome to the club! I am hoping we can see each other again before the year is up and compare notes. Your business plan sounds highly intriguing. Would love to hear about your progress. :)

I loved your post. I’m always exploring ways people bring in extra income or build their own preferably non-traditional businesses. Your method is one that you don’t see on the standard “start your own business” or “work from home” websites. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.

Some people don’t get the math. I am marching towards the same abyss as well. It’s been almost 2 months for you. Hope it’s working out.
