The Proverbs 31 woman is *rare* in contemporary Western culture.
Money is a central topic in Scripture.
Great Post! I think that there is sometimes a misconception in the church that women should stay at home and I disagree with that. It’s nice to see someone out there blogging about the bible and giving some true solid advice about it. I commend you for your bravery in posting about this topic
I have found more and more that a lot of women have trouble finding their defined Christian role these days and I always point them to this area of Proverbs!
Great, well rounded post! I totally agree and wish that all Christian women could feel free to do whatever God leads them to do whether it is stay at home, work outside the home, or anything in between. God leads us all in different directions. “God’s plans for us are as different as the prints on our hands”.
Great Post! Thanks for the references.
The Bible seems like the original self-help book (I mean that in a nice way). In addition to the spiritual material, it codifies a lot of rules of thumb that were useful.
Hi !
I agree! In fact I love this verse in the bible very much. It is what keeps me going.:) Saw you from MMND’s thread. Hope to see you in my blogs too! Be blessed!

Great post, me being the macho guy that I’m this is a hard post to take. When is comes from the Bible however you can’t deny it’s truths.
How dare you seek independence! Now, get back in that kitchen.
I’m kidding, of course. We’re Methodists in my family and you’d better believe my wife has a career. My Mom, a strong Baptist, is a psychologist and established a lucrative practice that helped increase our standard of living greatly.
That “subservient woman” vibe has always seemed a bit to, well, Muslim for my liking.
And here are the values I’m passing on to my daughter — I want her to go to college, study something she loves and build a career about it. I don’t want to ever see her beholding to some man. What if that man goes bad, starts drinking and starts beating the hell out of her. I hope she’ll have the confidence in herself and self-reliance to get out of that relationship.
I agree with you that women have the God-sanctioned option of establishing careers if they so choose.
Good post!
I totally agree with you. Christian women were never encouraged to be idle. If and when a husband can comfortably afford to provide for his family, then, I think the woman has the option to stay at home and be a full-time wife. But if this is not just possible, I think the Bible does not discourage women to be active, to go out and somehow help the husband. In fact, the wife is a helpmeet – a helper for her partner in life.
it takes Godly wisdom, though, to strike a balance so as not to compromise the family – the marriage and the raising of the kids. but i think it is absolutely do-able.
Great post. I will be returning to read more.

Thank you for this!! I find myself occasionally feeling defensive of my full-time job and multitudes of side projects- but what I do is what God gave me to do! I am a jewelry designer and am able to touch peoples’ lives every day through my work, and our family business still sends a tithe out to the mission field monthly, so I know God has blessed the work of our hands. I grew up in the store, beside both my hard-working parents, and my mom had no need to define herself by some modern Christian cultural slide rule. Neither do I.
My kids hang out at work sometimes, some days i work from home, some days my husband does. They get all of the attention they need, and my husband and i are using the talents that the Lord gave us, and our children are learning a good work ethic as well as learning to adapt to any environment.
Sometimes I see women trapped into the ‘i gotta stay at home or people will judge me’ mindset and i pity them. If you have a talent outside of domestic duty, if your soul needs to be in service or accounting or the nursing field- go for it! I believe that almost any career can be fit into family life if treated with respect and realism.
Your post really was an encouragement to me, thanks so much.
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
1 Timothy, 2:12
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
1 Corinthians 14:34
I disagree with: “I believe that Christianity is a religion that gives women a lot of freedom compared to many other religions.”
What other religions are comparing to? I think anyone who thinks that their religion gives women a lot of freedom, can find arguments in their holy texts to support those beliefs.
While it is obvious that the Proverbs 31 wife brings in income, buys real estate, etc. What most seem to ignore is the fact that she is doing this all in the context of her “household”. She is not out and away from her children.
Also, we have to take the bible as a whole. We cannot just look at Proverbs 31 and say that it is ok to throw our kids in day care and go out and get a job.
You need to look at Titus 2:3-5 to keep Proverbs 31 in context.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
What seems hard in this day and age is to unshackle ourselves from feminist doctrine that dictates that the only way a woman can be equal with a man is to compete with men at every level. This is perhaps the biggest disservice to women ever conceived.
The bible lays out a complimentarian model of the roles and relationships between a husband and a wife. Each completes the other. Neither has an intrinsic value greater than the other, but Gos has developed a hierarchy of roles we are to adhere to so that we can then submit ourselves to the greater hierarchy between Jesus and his Church. There is no shame or anything demeaning in this hierarchy.
God gives us an example of this complimentarian hierarchy in his very Godhead. God, the father is the head, Jesus, the Son, is subject to God, and the Holy Spirit is directed by the Son, but they all, as a whole are completely God. There isn’t a single aspect of God that is greater than the other.
Don´t forget that King Lemuel´s mother gave him advice on what type of woman to look for, so this makes me think that she was a business woman herself.
