When I meet students from China these days, most of them are financed by their families, and almost none of them work in restaurants now. Near my house there is a Chinese restaurant that I visit quite often. In the end of the last century I could still meet a few students from China working there, but lately there are no longer any Chinese students. Instead, all the workers are either Mexican or Chinese immigrants not here for school. When I think about this I think Chinese parents should learn from the Americans and let their children work in addition to going to school. My daughter started a blog a month after reading my blog. Her main goal is to educate her generation and popularize the idea of living beneath one’s means. In about two months she wrote about sixty blog posts and one particular post is titled, Those of you young people who can read English might as well head over and read her post.

She wrote about how she used different methods such as working at school, contracting, selling books, and entering sweepstakes to earn money. I am very glad that she inherited the Chinese traditions of diligence and frugality. At the same time she learned a lot from the Americans. For example, she donates a good amount of her income and volunteers. I thought to myself, when we were in Hawaii we experienced quite a bit from working in America, and the hardships of that time is quite worthwhile.

In January of 1993, I became a full time student at Kapiolani, so I no longer had time to work at . On my first day at school, I went to the library to borrow books and I passed by the student cafeteria. At the door of the cafeteria I saw a wanted ad that read, “The cafeteria needs three student workers to help the chefs prepare lunch. The pay is $6.75 per hour and lunch is free.”

When I saw this ad I was quite happy, because I figured that I can solve my problem of losing my job and spending money for tuition. This job has fairly flexible hours and I can work there for two hours after my morning classes and also get a free meal. I no longer needed to pack lunch, and this was awesome. Packing lunch may seem like a joke to modern day international students, but at that time I remember we would always spend three dollars to buy a 10 pound pack of chicken drumsticks. After we cook it with soy sauce, we would make chicken sandwiches with some bread and tomatoes. We ate like this for several years. After that, I didn’t want to touch chicken drumsticks anymore because I have eaten way too many of them.

Apparently the second largest bank failure in American history was just announced yesterday.  IndyMac Bank has been closed by the Office of Thrift Supervision and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named the Conservator.  IndyMac Bank’s assets has been transferred to  a new FDIC insured federal entity called IndyMac Federal Bank and the FDIC has control over its operations.  This is the fifth bank failure in 2008, but it is by far the largest since IndyMac has over $32 billion in holdings. The FDIC will probably try to get a buyer for IndyMac’s assets while keeping it in operations for a little while. It is estimated that it would cost FDIC $4 to $8 billion to dispose of IndyMac.

So is it time to panic?  Well, lets take a look at history.  The last time there was a housing bubble was in the late 80s.  After that the bubble promptly popped, many many banks failed.  According to the FDIC there were 127 bank failures in 1991 and the total assets held by these dead banks was around $63 billion. Leading up to 1991 there were 207 failures in 1989, and 169 failures in 1990, but the total assets in those years were only $29.2 billion and $15.7 billion respectively.  The horror of those years is now known as the savings and loans crisis. After this crisis, the FDIC significantly raised the insurance premiums on deposits and new banking bills were created that is supposed to stop insolvent banks from operating.

If you adjust for inflation, $63 billion in 1991 is equivalent to around $100 billion today.  The five bank failures of this year adds up to more than $34 billion in assets. So I think the worst is yet to come and all of us will experience some pain.   It’s going to get worse before it gets better, but there is very little we can do to stop the insolvent banks from failing at this point.  The good news is that the economy recovered the last time around and if you bought an index fund in 1991 and just sat on it you would be quite a bit  ahead today.  So once again I reiterate, if you are an investor then you shouldn’t panic and just .

Recently a news item highlighted a book called “” by Carol Dweck. Her research showed that those who believe they are innately talented and do not choose to grow tend to be less likely to fulfill their potential than people who believe their abilities can increase over time. She labeled the first group as people who have a “fixed mindset” and the second as people who have a “growth mindset”.

Dweck argued that the talented people with a fixed mindset are afraid to make mistakes and look stupid so they tend to take less challenges and develop their skills. On the other hand, those with a growth mindset jump at the chance to change and improve themselves and in the long run this group of people become more successful in business by learning from their mistakes and trials. Finally she says that it is possible for people to change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset even though it is not easy to let go “something that has felt like yourself for many years”.

Personally, I think I have been in a fixed mindset all throughout my childhood. It may have to do with being an Asian nerd who is good at school. People thought that I was smart at a pretty young age and that stereotype kind of stuck. I had very good grades in school and was really afraid of getting a B because that would be a failure. I thought that I was smart. That changed in highschool and college because I met too many people that are a lot smarter. I think when your friends are smarter or more successful than you it keeps you humble. Being in that environment also spurs a bit of healthy competition.

Now I am more up for new things and new challenges because I am no longer in school. I now understand that your grades do not matter that much in real life. Nobody cares what I got on my SATs 10 years ago, and nobody cares that I wrote an English paper that I got an A on. It is important to learn new things at work and try out new projects because otherwise I get extremely bored. If I had to do the same thing for the rest of my life then it would be like living the same day over and over again. That is a frightening thought, but most of us do it anyway because we are used to being institutionalized.

So I guess having a growth mindset means that I would be able to step outside of my comfort zone and try something unknown. I have done that when I moved out of my parents’ house, , and . I must confess that I am still afraid of failure because my life is pretty good right now, but I am now less afraid of making big changes in my life because change makes life more interesting and colorful.

How about you?  Are you in a fixed mindset or do you thrive on change?

So I am turning 25 this week, and last month the hubby found a singular white hair on my head. I guess I am getting old. Lately days have been passing by extremely quickly for me. I guess I have been quite busy at work so each day just passes by in the blink of an eye. Anyway, here are some of my thoughts about turning a quarter century old.

I look and sound younger than 25 in real life. A couple years ago I called my doctor to make a doctor’s appointment and the lady on the phone said to me, “Honey, can I get your father on the phone?” Apparently she thought I was making a prank call. The same thing happened when I called United Airlines about my airline miles. The customer service representative actually said to me that I sound like I’m 12 years old. I am also pretty short so sometimes people think I am a teenager. I have been carded at Blockbuster’s for renting an R rated movie and also carded at Trader Joe’s for buying a loaf of peach liqueur cake. It’s kind of funny sometimes, but it can also be a challenge. I know that it is tough for people to take me seriously in real life sometimes because I look like a little kid. Also, if I were a manager or something I imagine my reports would feel funny being an underling of a person that looks and sounds like a little girl. So in a way I am glad that I am getting older.

On the internet, several people who read my blogs have told me that they can’t believe that I am only 24 because I seem to know a lot of stuff and I can write somewhat coherently. Some people have said that I seem very mature for a 24 year old. I take that as a compliment to my writing, but in reality I am not all that mature. People who know me know that I am a pretty hyper person that laughs at fart jokes and enjoys slaughtering others in boardgames. I do keep a good handle on my finances and career, but those who know me would never describe me as mature. My husband would say that I am extremely immature.

Anyway, sometimes I do feel like I am a child pretending to be an adult and sometimes I feel guilty about earning more money than a lot of people in my parents’ generation. Ultimately, I am pretty thankful to have lived this long and experienced all that I have already experienced. One thing that I still think is pretty amazing is that if I weren’t my parents’ first child then I would probably have never been born because of . So I am thankful to God for letting me be the first fertilized egg in my mommy’s tummy, and I’m thankful to my parents for keeping me even though I am a girl.

I don’t know how many more years I have, but I will try to enjoy whatever time I get.
