No kidding! I am certainly no HR rep, nor would I want to be, but they always have to phrase the questions so that EVERY answer SOUNDS like it could work. But in so doing, it flatlines the survey in general.
Clearly people are going to rate themselves a bit higher than they actually are. I think a better metric is to have a "peer evaluation" where you closest 4 or 5 people you work with fill it out for you (and you have 4 or 5 people you critique on also). It gets a more honest opinion I think...

I know it's not a judeo-Christian ethic, but sometimes on these things you really do have to toot your own horn. Best of luck with this.

Creating positive personal impact is one of the five keys to success that I discuss in my new book "Straight Talk for Success."
Self evaluations are a great opportunity to create positive personal impact. A well written, thoughtful self evaluation can go a long way in helping your boss to see you at your best.
Don't inflate your accomplishments. Don't minimize them either. I like your idea of keeping a notebook that lists your acomplishments.
Remember, your self evaluation should be a discussion starter with your boss. Use it that way, and you'll be likely to get osme helpful feedback.
Good luck,
Bud Bilanich

I hate evaluations. I say be honest. I have supervised people and this is just a tool to keep reviews on track and to the point.
