This is a great post. I've never put much thought into why friends are unmotivated by their jobs, but the reason of the intangible product seems like it could contribute to that.

As for the QA engineer aspect, I'm glad you took pride in your role. Currently, I am also exploring which role my skills and interests would provide the most satisfying career. I have thought that I'd be interested in a hardware test/characterization position, but for some reason, some ppl seem to think that it is not as glorious as design or going to the managing track. I guess because managers and designers take most of the credit for the project, but I think characterization is extremely important as well.

While our work is less tangible it is still very satisfying. I wonder how much of our perception of our work being less meaningful comes from people outside of the industry not understanding what goes into software. Does making software that is easy to install lead people to believe that programming is just as easy? And therefor less meaningful? I think so.

I was being questioned by a family member today why I don't do something 'real.' I find my work as a programmer very rewarding. Especially when you see something working that you made.

My jobs at the hospital and the library have the advantage of being very tangible. I can say that I tested X babies or spent so many hours helping patrons take home good books or making those books available. I think that's why I enjoy them so much.
