Today I read a rather interesting article on Yahoo about how the digital age has made a lot of our work less satisfying.  A lot of us do not see what we are producing since our products are less tangible.  For example, managers’ jobs usually consist of drawing up charts and scheduling meetings.  While in the past people made things like chairs and car parts.  The fact that a lot of our work these days are virtual and intangible makes it less meaningful to people.  This made me wonder, what makes my work meaningful?

So, let me explain a bit what I do on a daily basis.  I write scripts and programs that build and package lines of code into executable installers and installable packages.  When you buy a software program and insert a  CD into a computer usually an installer comes up, and well, I’m the the type of engineer that makes those CDs.  It is pretty tedious work, and the products are real, but intangible in the sense that I can’t really touch the program I compiled.  Though on most days I do find my job meaningful because the installers and builds I create are being used by people all over the world.  Sometimes it is hard to explain what I do to people who are not in software.  For example, my grandparents have no idea what I do, and I have no idea how to describe my job in Chinese.  So I just tell them I work with computers.

Before I became a release engineer I was a QA engineer for a couple years, and it is another fairly tedious job, but quite fun when you nail a nasty bug.  What is not fun is to do long performance tests without getting conclusive results.  I  really think that QA engineers are extremely important.   The problem is that QA engineers seem to be less respected for the most part in the software industry.  One time I had an interview where the interviewers were quite impressed with me, and then asked me why I became a QA engineer like it was a bad thing.  I was actually kind of offended and didn’t take their offer. So I think a job is also more meaningful when it is a respected profession.

Right now I find writing blog articles to be quite fun and meaningful, because I can read what I write, and thousands of other people read my thoughts everyday.  I wouldn’t really call it work because it is a hobby, but if I were given the opportunity to write full time I would totally do it.

That’s the end of my rant. What makes your work meaningful?

I also find it difficult to explain my work to non-engineers, especially non-technical people in general. When I did software, I must say that I may not have given quality the appropriate respect. At my company though, I think there simply weren’t enough QA people, so they never had time to do much for us, so we assumed they just wouldn’t show up to meetings, etc.

My work meaningful… Well, I do work with things that will have a physical end result. But the timeline is YEARS and my piece is a tiny fraction…

What makes it meaningful to ME is if something challenges me and I come up with a working solution. Or if I get to work in the lab and I finally make something work.

No one seems to like it when I tell them I manipulate strings of symbols for a living, even though it works on many levels.

At the highest level, I manipulate strings: I write some code; I write some documentation; I write an email.

The compiler is a string of bits that takes another string of bits, the source code, as input and outputs another string of bits, the object file. Once the object file is loaded into memory and executed, it reads strings of bits as input and writes strings of bits as output.

So I write strings that get transformed by a string into other strings, which then, in turn, transform strings into other strings.

At the moment, part of what is meaningful is that I am working for myself, so I am learning how to build a business.

I always have an eye peeled for like-minded, entrepreneurial folks. So much to learn.

My jobs at the hospital and the library have the advantage of being very tangible. I can say that I tested X babies or spent so many hours helping patrons take home good books or making those books available. I think that’s why I enjoy them so much.

While our work is less tangible it is still very satisfying. I wonder how much of our perception of our work being less meaningful comes from people outside of the industry not understanding what goes into software. Does making software that is easy to install lead people to believe that programming is just as easy? And therefor less meaningful? I think so.

I was being questioned by a family member today why I don’t do something ‘real.’ I find my work as a programmer very rewarding. Especially when you see something working that you made.

This is a great post. I’ve never put much thought into why friends are unmotivated by their jobs, but the reason of the intangible product seems like it could contribute to that.

As for the QA engineer aspect, I’m glad you took pride in your role. Currently, I am also exploring which role my skills and interests would provide the most satisfying career. I have thought that I’d be interested in a hardware test/characterization position, but for some reason, some ppl seem to think that it is not as glorious as design or going to the managing track. I guess because managers and designers take most of the credit for the project, but I think characterization is extremely important as well.
