Buying a house is not always the most financially prudent option. My wife and I have been renting our house for the past 5 years. We can afford to buy a house, but much prefer to invest our money in higher yielding and more diversified portfolio (including a stocks, bonds and diversified real-estate).

In my opinion, retirement savings are superior to house savings. The main reason is the tax benefits of saving for retirement.

Yup, you're right in saying that I didn't consider rent at all. However, my original point is that if you do save for purely a house and not save for retirement then it will be much harder to save for retirement. Also, I was assuming that other expenses will stay the same and what you save is purely extra cash. So I didn't consider that mortgage eliminates your rent.

If you have to use some of the money you would have used for a mortgage to pay rent , how can you save all of it?
